NEW YORK (Reuters) - Facebook has not stored hundreds of millions of Facebook users' passwords and tens of thousands on Instagram properly and has kept them in a database for its employees, Facebook said Thursday.

"The company is hiding users' passwords when they create the account, so no employee can see it," said Pedro Kanahoyati, vice president of security and confidentiality at Facebook. "This is not what happened in this case," he said.

"These secret words have never been visible to anyone outside the company, and we have not received any evidence to date that passwords have been accessed by any company employee," Kanahawati said.

Facebook explained that it was able to discover the passwords during a security review conducted in January and opened an investigation into the subject. Facebook said it would inform millions of users of Facebook and tens of thousands of Integrators users that their passwords were part of the incident.
