84,000 Americans hospitalized for H1N1 virus
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said between 69 and 84,000 Americans have been admitted to hospitals because of the flu in the past three months.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the United States has experienced one of the worst flu outbreaks in nearly 10 years during the 2017-2018 season after more than 900,000 people entered hospitals and more than 80,000 died.
According to data collected by the health institution, between six million and seven million people were infected with influenza between October 1 2018 and January 5, 2019.
Health regulators are trying to fight the spread of influenza in the United States, and the Food and Drug Administration has approved the first new treatment for influenza in nearly 20 years last year.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month marked the start of the flu season and said 24 states reported widespread cases and that the dominant strain of the season was H1N1.
The strain of influenza that prevailed during the last season is H3N2 and was linked to cases of severe injury and death, especially among children and the elderly.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to recommend vaccination as the best way to reduce the risk of influenza and advises people in the most dangerous category to go to hospitals for treatment with an antiviral drug.
