These structures were discovered when a large old mass grave was discovered during the construction of a National Opera House and a library between the center of Athens and the port of Piraeus. Reuters said she made a rare visit to the place and saw the skeletons, some of which were placed in a regular row, while others were placed on top of each other.

"They were all executed in the same way," said Stella Krisulaki, head of exploration. "They are all handcuffed, most of them very young and in very good health at the time of execution." Experts hope DNA tests and archaeologists' research will reveal the fact that these people died, but the systematic way of burying them suggests they were More than ordinary slaves or criminals. The mass grave dates back to the 8th and 5th centuries BC.

"It is a period of great turmoil in Athenian society ... It is a time when aristocrats and nobles are fighting for power," said Krisulaki. "There is a strong hypothesis that the dead were supporters of Sillon, a nobleman in Athens and an Olympian who carried out a coup attempt in 632 BC. The coup failed and Sailon hid in a temple in the Acropolis. Sailon managed to escape but his supporters were killed.
